This was a banner season for the VHS track team, with both boys and girls winning the Super Essex Championship and the Girls taking the Sectional title.  Not surprisingly, the team produced a bumper crop of champions, seven athletes from Verona who competed in the Meet of Champions in South Plainfield this weekend. Unfortunately, Dave Oster missed his last race for the Maroon and White due to a hip injury. The other six Verona athletes did well, especially considering the competition–the very best athletes competing in their premier event, from schools all over the state.

We wish the very best to seniors Rebecca Slotkin (Lafayette College), Ashlee Petroski (Rowan University) and Dave Lukas (SUNY New Paltz); we’ll be following your collegiate track and field careers. And we look forward to great things from the underclassmen and a repeat at the MOC for juniors Sapara-Grant, Scully and Lee next year.

Here are the results:

Rebecca Slotkin tied for 13th in the Pole Vault with a vault of 10-06.00

Ashlee Petroski was 15th in the 400-Meter Hurdles with a time of 1:05.23

Dave Lukas was 26th in the 3,200-Meter run with a time of 9:54.79

Kelly Scully was 19th in the 1,600-Meter race with a time of 5:33.09

Kweku Sapara-Grant was 21st in the Triple Jump with a jump of 43-00.50

Rebecca Lee was 33rd in the Shot Put with a throw of 34-08.75
