The vocal and instrumental musicians of H.B. Whitehorne Middle School took home almost as many souvenirs as trophies from their trip to Music In The Parks on Friday.

At the competition’s awards ceremony, held at Great Adventure, HBW Voices garnered first place and a rating of excellent, while Acoustics’ rating of excellent won it second place. The White, Maroon and Gold concert all received a rating of excellent in their respective match-ups, with first places for the White and Maroon bands and a second place for Gold. Mikayla Alquist, who you may have heard in the role of the Marshall in the middle school performance of Seussical Jr., won an individual award for the best vocalist.

But the day’s highest honors were reserved for the HBW Jazz band, which won first place in its division with a rating of superior, as well as the overall award for best jazz band. As you listen to the Jazz band’s two pieces below, try to remind yourself that these kids are only still in middle school.
