The Softball team could have been intimidated going into Monday’s matchup with Millburn. Millburn was on a tear, having won the previous four games straight. Their record was 13-8 to Verona’s 5-11. And in the previous game between the two, Millburn won, in a close contest that had been within Verona’s grasp.
But instead of being defeatist, Verona took the closeness of the earlier contest as proof that they could beat Millburn, and did handily, 10-4. “We went into the game thinking that we would be able to beat them because we had come really close,” says senior second baseman Teresa Lau, who had 3 hits Monday. “It was great to win after losing last time, and it was great to kill that winning streak.”
Stephanie Colon also had three of the team’s 18 hits. Freshman hurler Marissa Manley gave up 10 hits, struck out four and walked one.
The team, seeded last at 16th, meets top-seeded Park Ridge in the first round of the state tournament Wednesday at 4 in Park Ridge. In the event of rain, the match will be played on Thursday.
