The Verona Girls’ and Boys’ Track teams held their own over the weekend in the Essex County Championships at Montclair High School. Competing against nearly 20 county schools, the Verona teams came in 7th (girls) and 9th (boys).

Rebecca Slotkin was the only first-place finisher from Verona. Her 11-0 vault tied the meet record set by Rachel Joseph of Livingston in 2006. Dave Oster placed second in the 3,200-meter run with his time of 9:23.57, behind archrival Tyler Udland of Millburn who finished at 9:14.63. Dave Lukas placed 6th in the race, at 9:57.62. Kweku Sapara-Grant placed third in the triple jump with 42-6 1/2.

Besides Slotkin, the girls had two other finishers in the field events: Rebecca Lee, who threw the shot put 35 0-3/4 for fourth place, and Montana DelColle, who placed sixth in discus with a throw of 100-9. Kelly Scully placed sixth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:00.04.
