Pity the poor Leonia tennis team, whom Verona will face on Wednesday in the semifinal State tournament match. Once the Leonia players hear of Verona’s trouncing of Emerson High School today in the early rounds of the tournament, how the Verona boys gave up only 1 game in 8 sets, they will surely be shaking in their tennis shoes. The fact that Leonia faced Verona last year in the tournament and was on the losing end 5-0 isn’t likely to help their confidence. Neither is the fact that the Hillbillies are seeded first in the tournament. (Leonia is seeded fourth).
In today’s match at the Verona high school courts, the singles trio of Paul Corrente (first singles), Mike Streifer (second singles) and Noah Herman (third singles) all won 6-0, 6-0. In first doubles, Will Schenkel and Matt Tuorto won 6-0, 6-1; at second doubles, Mack Kirby and Brian Farrell won 6-0, 6-0.
Wednesday’s match is at home and starts at 4; the rain date is Thursday, also at home at 4. If the boys win Wednesday, they will play in the state tournament final at a neutral site early next week.
