The Verona Recreation Department has just announced a new, free basketball program for 7th and 8th grade girls, but you need to work fast to get your girls into it.

The 90-minute program, called the Head Start Basketball Clinic, starts this Friday, April 9 at 6 p.m. in the Community Center gym. The clinic will be held every Friday through June 11.

There’s no fee, but you’ve got to use the Rec Department’s online registration program to enroll. Go to the town’s Web site and look for the Recreation Online Registration logo.

According to Jim Cunningham, Rec Department director, the idea for the program came from the coach of the basketball travel team, who wanted, pardon the pun, to keep the ball moving in the off season. If successful, it could set the stage for off-season clinics in other sports.
