We don’t yet know how big the school budget cut will be in Verona, but it’s a safe bet it won’t be anywhere near as large as what Montclair school officials have put on the table.

According to the Star Ledger, Montclair needs to close a gaping $5.1 million budget hole, and is proposing the elimination of more than 60 jobs and several programs to do so. Last week, the school board has asked Montclair’s 1,000-member school employees union to renegotiate its contract, and was met with a flat refusal. Salaries and benefits account for 83% of Montclair’s budget, the story notes. What does the union chief want cut? School sports.

Stay tuned.
