Two athletes from the VHS Winter Track Team, both named Rebecca, both won gold medals at the sectional meet two weeks ago, helping to boost the girls’ team to a second place finish overall. Then, the next weekend at the Groups meet, they did their tandem act again, both coming home with silver.
We wouldn’t blame you for assuming that the Rebeccas run relays together, but in fact Rebecca Slotkin is a pole vaulter and Rebecca Lee throws the shot put. They just have an uncanny synergy, along with the same first name and a knack for winning.
Slotkin jumped 11 feet at the sectional meet, a personal best, and 10′ 6″ at Groups, despite feeling ill. Lee threw the shot put 33 ft. 10.5 in. at state sectionals and 34 ft. 6.5 in. at groups.
This weekend, the Rebeccas will be competing in the Meet of Champions in Tom’s River. We’ll be rooting for them. And we are certain that they’ll be rooting for each other.
Hi Julia! Um, the men’s world record for high jump is about 8 feet. So 11 feet is quite good! But really I think it’s the pole vault, yes?
that would be high jump. this is communal journalism at its best. thanks, mike.
