The New Jersey Audubon Society is holding a series of bird-watching hikes in parks around Essex County. The first one is Thursday, January 14 at Becker Park, which you may remember from your childhood as Becker Farm. The hike starts at 9 a.m. and the Audubon folks want everybody to meet in the parking lot of the Essex County Environmental Center in Roseland first. The hike is free but space is limited.
Next up is a January 16 hike in Monte Irvin Orange Park in Orange. This is a more urban setting and you’ll meet your fellow hikers at 9 a.m. in the parking lot at the intersection of Center Street and Elmywnd Drive. From Verona, head east on 280 to exit 11B/Center Street. Turn left onto South Day Street. Turn left onto Capuchin Way. Turn right onto Center Street, and the park will be on the left.
The last hike in January is also an urban destination, Weequahic Park in Newark, on Thursday January 28. This hike will take place on the trail around the lake and will feature wintering ducks, gulls and passerine birds. The Audubon Society says to meet at the east end of the lake at 9 a.m.
