MyVeronaNJ-GolfApparently, it’s never too cold to think about playing your first round of golf in the spring.

Essex County has just sent us notice that it will slice $5 off the price of a County Golf ID Card if you renew your card between now and Monday, March 15. The “Early Bird Discount” drops the cost of the ID card to $40 from $45, but you can only renew by mail or in person to bag the cheaper rate. The card is good at all three of Essex County’s public golf courses: Francis Byrne Golf Course in West Orange, Hendricks Field in Belleville and Weequahic Golf Course in Newark.

To renew in person, you’ve got to bring your current Golf ID Card and two proofs of residency. One must be a current driver’s license or photo ID and the other a voter registration card or a bill from PSE&G, phone or cable. Be prepared to pay in credit card or check (made payable to the Essex County Department of Parks) and go to the Essex County Parks Administration Building, 115 Clifton Avenue, Newark. Essex County says its Golf ID Unit (who even knew there was such a thing) is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you don’t want to schlep to Newark you can also renew at the golf courses. The times and days for each location can be found here.

To renew by mail, you need the same proof that you are you, but you can only pay by check or money order and your application must be postmarked no later than March 15.

If you’re a new golfer or if there are any changes to your old ID you’ve got to renew in person. And if you find all this more confusing than the tabloid coverage of Tiger Woods, just call the Essex County Golf ID Unit at (973) 268-3520.[mappress]
