Verona will begin picking up Christmas trees this Wednesday, January 6, and each Wednesday through January 27. You should place your tree–cleared of decorations–at the curb, but if you dragged it out of the house in a plastic bag, that will have to be removed as well.
If you want to mulch your tree, you’re going to have to find a friend with a chipper, or travel a bit. Perfect Christmas Tree Farm in Phillipsburg, NJ is having its sixth annual Tree Chip day on Saturday, January 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
But maybe we should all take a cue from Bloomfield. According to the Star Ledger, that town is picking up potted Christmas trees from its residents to re-landscape Brookdale Park. The paper quotes Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. as saying the donation project will be extended to other county parks next year.
We never throw our tree out. My husband puts it outside next to the bird feeders. We throw seed in it and the birds love it. In the Spring, we take it to the Compost Center at the end of Commerce Court when it opens. This reduces the amount of tonnage that we pay for. More people should do this. Green, green, green! Oh, and while we are there, the kids can see the sewer system and where all their sewage goes. Very interesting and FREE. Happy New Year!
