The American flag is flying on Fells Road this morning, which means the Pond is open for skating.

To get there, head south on Fells Road (that’s the traffic light by the Community Center) to the corner of Fells Road and Forest Way. The two ponds there are frozen solid, but need to get a bit of snow dusted off. If you are going with small kids go early in the day because the Pond is is a big destination for hockey players. And remember, the Pond is technically for Essex Fells residents, so don’t wear your Verona sweats.

No skating sign up yet either at the Canfield-Morgan House in Cedar Grove or Verona Park Lake, but we’ll let you know as soon as they are open.

  1. My aunt and uncle lived in Essex Fells right up the road from this skaing pond. I spent many winters back in the 60’s and 70’s skating there…

  2. Thinking about moving to essex fells by the pond. Was wondering if this is a good move. Right now the pond is drained an it looks like an eyesore, they say it fills in with flowers? When the pond is opened is it pound and crowded? Thanks…

  3. The field looks lovely in spring and summer when it’s in full bloom (it’s a bit late this year because of all the cold). It’s never been a loud place in winter when we’ve been there, but we don’t go at prime hockey times. You might try checking with the Essex Fells police to see what they can tell you.
